Loyle Carner reveals Fontaines DC’s Grian Chatten rejected feature on his new album, ‘Hopefully!’
Loyle Carner has revealed that Fontaines DC frontman Grian Chatten rejected a feature on his latest album, Hopefully!, after the rapper asked him to participate.
Carner, real name Ben Coyle-Larner, appeared on a recent episode of the popularYouTube series Chicken Shop Date, hosted by Amelia Dimoldenberg, when he made the revelation about the Fontaines DC leader’s snub from his record.
He told Dimoldenberg that the real reason he has opted to sing as well as rap on the album was because Chatten rejected his requests, saying: “Do you know the guy Grian, the lead singer? There were a few songs that I really wanted someone to sing on. We were talking for ages and then as soon as I talked about him being on one of my tunes, he just stopped replying.”
However, despite this rejection, it forced Carner to become resourceful, as he added: “So then I had to record it myself. So it’s kind of thanks to him that I’m singing on [the album].”
The rapper’s album Hopefully! was released on June 20th as his fourth studio effort, following on from the critically acclaimed Hugo in 2022.
Having become a father to two young children in the past few years, Carner has spoken openly about how his experience of parenthood has shaped the album, telling Billboard in April: “I’m a person I never thought I could become.”
He is set to follow the album with a world tour, as well as a headline slot on the Other Stage at Glastonbury on June 27th. Charli XCX and The Prodigy are set to headline the same stage over the next two nights.
Elsewhere, although Chatten’s Fontaines DC are not heading to Worthy Farm this year as they are playing in Serbia, Greece, and Italy over the weekend. However, afterwards they will head to the UK later in the summer for a range of headline gigs.
