Lorde gatecrashes Lorde-themed club night in Sydney

Lorde made a surprise appearance at a Lorde-themed club night at Mary’s Underground in Sydney on May 26th.

The evening celebrated the singer’s career, with revellers turning up in their droves to unite and dance to her biggest hits. However, they didn’t expect Lorde to get swept up in the occasion and join them.

Andrew Fraser, who was in attendance, told The Guardian: “Lorde made her way through the swarm of people, going between dancing and taking a moment to greet, hug and converse with multiple fans, allowing each to have their moment and to explain what her music means to them.”

Lorde was at the nightclub for around half an hour before departing under instruction from her management. While she was in the room, the singer-songwriter is reported to have sung along to a number of her hits with fans and came back after initially leaving to lip-sync to her Charli XCX collaboration, ‘Girl, So Confusing’.

The New Zealander’s fourth album, Virgin, is set to arrive on June 27th; therefore, many would presume that Lorde’s record label planned this stunt. However, a representative from EMI Australia told Guardian Australia they had no involvement and described it as an “impromptu decision” by the singer.

While the venue, Mary’s Underground, were delighted by her appearance, it wasn’t a complete surprise. Earlier in the day, her security team had scouted out the room, which got tongues wagging among staff that she might arrive.

In a statement, the venue said: “We tried to shuffle her to the green room but she wasn’t having it. Straight into the crowd, singing along, soaking it up. (She) almost refused to leave when her management were trying to usher her out.”

Following the release of Virgin, Lorde will embark on a global arena tour later this year. The tour will begin with a North American leg on September 17th at the Moody Center in Texas. It will then traverse Europe and the UK before returning to mainland Europe to conclude in Stockholm on December 9th.
