Lorde accused of copying on new track ‘Man of the Year’ by Rahim Redcar
Lorde’s new single has immediately been criticised by Rahim Redcar, formerly Christine and the Queens, who has accused the popstar of copying without credit.
Soon after the release of the song and accompanying video, Redcar took to his Instagram, writing: “To Lorde: I guess you’re welcome lol. So weird to see such constant elements of my work being digested and put forward without ever being credited as an inspiration.”
Lorde has been consistently open about her gender identity in the run-up to the release of Virgin. At the MET Gala, she wore a dress with an open back that would serve as an “easter egg” for content to come, and it was echoed in the new ‘Man of the Year’ music video. On tour in 2022, Redcar also used tape to cover his chest.
Redcar’s Instagram post continued: “Erasure of my talent somehow happened because of my strange path? Do you think? What else was I supposed to do? Lie?”
He added, “I wonder if I will have one day the credit I deserve, and I say this with no bitterness, just genuine curiosity. Let’s be real I am made to enjoy massive gigs so why can’t they honor the first flame?”
Lorde noted how ‘Man of the Year’ was partially inspired by her experience of trying on a pair of men’s jeans and showing a picture of it to her producer Jim-E Stack: “He was like, ‘I want to see the you that’s in this picture represented in the music.’ This was before I had any sense of my gender broadening at all.”
Lorde’s discovery blossomed; now, though she prefers she/her pronouns, she has stated that she “feels like a man and a woman.”
The Liability singer will kick off her sold-out Ultrasound World Tour in September. The tour will have numerous special guests, including Oklou and The Japanese House, and will hit multiple nights at iconic venues including Madison Square Garden, London’s O2 Arena, AFAS Live in Amsterdam, and The Anthem in Washington, DC.
