Lil Nas X to enter mental health diversion programme following police battery charges

A judge has confirmed that Lil Nas X will enter a mental health diversion programme, which may lead to the dismissal of the musician’s police battery charges.

The court ruled that if the Grammy-winning artist is able to stick to an assigned treatment programme and is able to obey the law for two years, his felony charges will be dropped.

The ruling comes as it was determined that the incident involving the musician was a result of his bipolar disorder, and was clearly not a reflection of his usual behaviour.

In order to stay within the rules of the programme, Lil Nas X is also prohibited from possessing any guns or threatening violence.

The news comes after Lil Nas X allegedly charged at Los Angeles police officers in August 2025 after being approached for walking down the street in his underwear.

Following the incident, the rapper was initially taken to the hospital for treatment of a possible overdose and then taken to a police station, where he stayed for the rest of the weekend.

The ‘Old Town Road’ singer took to social media shortly after his arrest to let fans know he was okay and open up about what he described as a terrifying few days.

He said: “Your girl is gonna be OK, y’all. OK? Shit’s gonna be all right, shit’s gonna be all right […] Shit! That was fucking terrifying. That was terrifying! That was a terrifying last four days, but your girl is gonna be all right.”

When speaking to the Rolling Stone outside of his recent court hearing, Lil Nas X said that he was “just very thankful” about the mental health diversion programme, and that it “could have been much worse.”
