Life Aquatic Band – ‘Stuck In The Mud’ EP Review: Exhibit A of Sheffield’s greatness
Eternally stuck in the shadow of Manchester and Leeds, the great music coming out of Sheffield is all too often painfully overlooked. But also, despite the criminality of that, that’s freedom, only making the bands even better through expectation-less-ness. Need an example – look to Life Aquatic Band.
The Skinny: If there’s one thing Sheffield is especially good at, it’s making incredible live bands. In a city busy with incredible venues, from the iconic Yellow Arch to the new hub of Sidney and Matilda, any given night in town can be soundtracked by amazing bands, and those bands have a wide open playground to run free in.
Sheffield also comes along with a palpably friendly scene. Free from the cut-throatedness found in other musical hot spots, the crowd in Sheffield are not only each other’s collaborators, but also their cheerleaders, meaning that if they’re not on stage in an interchangeable circle economy of musicians, chances are they’re in the crowds. And the one place where you’ll definitely find a good amount of the city’s talent is at a Life Aquatic Band show – both as they flock as fans to the crowd, and of course, on stage.
It’s been that way for as long as I can remember. For close to a decade now, the band have packed out rooms with their endlessly fun live shows that feature your classic band set-up along with the addition of Tim Peters on trombone. Then, in 2020, they put that fun on tape with the incredible (and now lost-to-time) debut album, LABPD (or Band On The Hunt), presenting a concept album of them as a police force hunting down Paul McCartney. It represented them perfectly at that point in time, combining sheer silliness with genuine musical greatness.
But lately, there has been the sense that it’s time to get serious, and Stuck In The Mud comes as the result of that as the band give it their all on their most considered recordings yet.
It’s important to note that the fun has gone nowhere. This is a release that means serious musical business when it comes to the band, and it includes musicians, presenting their best efforts and proving their skills. But in terms of the song’s content and the maximalism of its sound, the perfect amount of fun and games is still there to be found, holding onto what makes the band so beloved, what encapsulates the spontaneous energy of Sheffield, but also what appeals to them in their biggest influences.
Life Aquatic Band are truly Sheffield’s answer to The B-52’s; a band that throws so much talent into creating a good time. All four tracks on the EP prove it well, as each is eccentric and kooky, refusing to be toned down or easily categorised, but also each gets you moving and gets stuck in your head.
In particular, the title track ‘Stuck In The Mud’ might just be the new equivalent of ‘Rock Lobster’ – a song so silly but so undeniably well done that its weirdness is what makes it great. And similar to the Athens scene that birthed them, outside of the big industry of New York, the freedom and lower stakes only make them better.
The Verdict: Life Aquatic Band should be the musical ambassadors of Sheffield. Their dedication to fun represents how a scene should operate, taking risks and being a little silly with it rather than dulling things down to strive for the boring big time. But at the same time, the talent on display in these well-crafted, dancing doses of maximalist joy should see them beaming out of the shadows.
