Liam Gallagher hits back at Glen Matlock for calling Oasis “boring”
Liam Gallagher has hit back at the Sex Pistols’ bassist Glen Matlock for a remark he recently made about Oasis being a “boring” band.
Responding to Matlock’s original comments via X, the Oasis frontman said “Fuck him. Sid was the Pistols”, referring to Sid Vicious, the man who would replace Matlock as the band’s bassist in 1977 until 1978 when the Sex Pistols split up.
Matlock’s initial swipe at Oasis came from an interview with NME. When asked about the excitement surrounding the announcement of the Oasis reunion tour, which is scheduled to take place in 2025, he said that he didn’t understand why there was so much hype surrounding their return.
“If you’re a fan, it’s understandable,” Matlock told the magazine. “I’ve always seen Oasis as a bit Status Quo […] to hear one song once is enough.”
The bassist would then go on to say that he had seen the band live on multiple occasions before their initial break-up, even dishing out praise towards Gallagher as a frontman.
“I think Liam is fantastic,” Matlock continued. “He sings great – he’s like Johnny Rotten but can carry a tune. He’s got a magnetic stage personality: he can just stand there and it’s riveting. The rest of the guys? No. I think they’re boring live. I’d never go to see ‘em.”
The Oasis reunion will take place in 2025 and run for a total of 41 dates across four continents. Tickets for the initial 17-date UK and Ireland tour sold out almost immediately, with many fans complaining about Ticketmaster’s dynamic pricing implementation.
The band have not previously played any shows together since 2009 following a fight between the Gallagher brothers before they were due to headline the Rock En Seine festival in Paris.
Meanwhile, the Sex Pistols recently reformed for a set of performances at Bush Hall in London as well as a UK tour, with original members Matlock, guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook being joined by vocalist Frank Carter, who assumed the place of the absent Johnny Rotten.
Matlock has not yet responded to the latest comments made by Gallagher.
What has Liam Gallagher previously said about the Sex Pistols?
Despite his recent comment in retaliation to Glen Matlock, Liam Gallagher has been a vocal supporter and fan of the Sex Pistols.
It was revealed in Matlock’s recent NME interview that he was invited to record with Oasis during the mid-1990s at the request of their then-label manager, Alan McGee. “There was a bit of talk about me helping them out with bass a long time ago,” claimed Matlock, “and then they sorted out the problem they had with the bloke who was doing it.”
Gallagher has also expressed further admiration towards the band in the past, telling The Guardian in 2017 that if there was one band in history he would have loved to have been a part of, it would have been the Sex Pistols.
“I would have loved to have been in the Pistols,” Gallagher told the British newspaper. “I’d have kicked out Johnny Rotten – he’d have gone. Paul Cook’s fucking mega. Steve Jones is the man. Sid Vicious, turn his bass down but he still fucking killed. But Rotten would have gone, I’m sorry. I can do Johnny Rotten in my sleep.”
