Laura Jane Grace, the unbreakable, unwaveringly badass singer of American punk institution Against Me!, has released a new video for her song ‘SuperNatural’ Possession’ from her second solo LP ‘Stay Alive’.
The video, which finds Grace armed with her signature Rickenbacker, is psychedelic in an old school experimental film kind of way, almost as though Grace got her hands on a bunch of old Stan Brakhage films and projected them behind her. At one point, to really drive home the metaphysical feeling, Grace opens her third eye and triggers an explosion of colours and trippy imagery.
Grace has taken on a vocal position of cultural leadership in punk rock throughout the past decade, whether purposefully or just by virtue of being herself and living her truth. For all its talk about idol destruction and no rules, punk rock is nowhere near as progressive or inclusive as it lets on. The genre can often spawn band’s with hateful rhetoric or misguided values, and more than a few angry young individuals see a genre based on discontent and channel their rage at the wrong targets. That’s why it’s so important to have a figure like Laura Jane Grace to be the ambassador for the best of what punk rock can be.
The one thing that bothers me about all of this is that Grace has become a figurehead without seeing the success bleed over to her musical output. She’s famous for being the most visible trans woman in punk since Jayne County, but she should be equally famous for leading one of the best punk bands of the past twenty years. ‘SuperNatural Possession’ is further proof that Grace is the preeminent purveyor of pairing catchy hooks and aggressive riffs, and it doesn’t look like she’ll be slowing down any time soon.
