Lady Gaga reveals she pretended to be her manager to secure early gigs
Lady Gaga is now celebrated as one of the biggest names in pop. However, she’s now revealed that there was a period when work was slow, and she had to be imaginative when trying to secure gigs.
Gaga shared in a recent interview with Hot Ones that when she struggled to get work, she resorted to creative measures to give herself a better chance of securing playing opportunities. While doing this, she would call clubs and venues, pretending to be her own manager, using various accents and tones of authority in a bid to secure gigs.
“I look back on that time so fondly when I would spend the whole day trying to get gigs,” she recalled to host Sean Evans. “I would knock on door after door and say, ‘Can I please play here?’”
Gaga continued, talking about securing work before anyone knew who she was, “Or I would call and pretend I was my manager. I would tell people ‘She’s so hot right now.’ Sometimes I would do an accent.”
The singer also spoke about the songwriting process and how her background playing the piano has helped her when putting different tracks together. Fans also got a glimpse into her early career before she called herself Lady Gaga, as she revealed she was in a high school covers band, Mackin Pulsifer.
Gaga is promoting her seventh studio album, Mayhem, which, judging from the single releases so far, feels like a throwback to her more experimental dance and hyper-pop roots. She recently shared the new track ‘Abracadabra’, which premiered during a commercial break at the Grammys.
Her new album, Mayhem, is set for release on March 7th.
