La Sécurité – ‘Bingo!’ album review: Where egg-punk meets art-rock

La Sécurité - 'Bingo!'
3.5

Far be it from me, or any budding music journalist, to bemoan an album for being overly polished or ambitious, but there is a growing sense that the modern rock landscape is at risk of taking itself far too seriously. Everything has to be dark, moody, and, in many cases, almost impressively up-its-own-arse. Amid that worrying scene, the egg-punk realm, and groups like La Sécurité are a welcome oasis.

The Skinny: Forged as a covid-induced side project back in 2020, the Montreal output have spent the past six years, on and off, becoming one of the most auspicious names in the North American division of ever-expanding egg-punk and DIY art-punk realm. On their newly-released LP Bingo!, the Éliane Viens-Synnott expand upon their raw, energetic rock and roll beginnings into an incredibly diverse, ambitious sound that nonetheless maintains the spontaneity and energetic power inherent in their earlier recordings.

In many ways, the opening paragraph of this review does a disservice to La Sécurité. They are, after all, a polished outfit of inarguably talented, technically proficient musicians making ambitious recordings that are not afraid to break the mould. Where they differ from the hordes of deliberately moody, arrogant rockers, though, is that records like Bingo! are still, for want of a better word, fun.

Evoking their egg-punk comrades, the group use catchy, fuzzy riffs, offbeat inclusions, and satirical lyrics, recapturing the dormant DIY spirit of rock and roll excellence in the process. At the same time, though, Bingo! isn’t a hastily thrown together, cassette-only Bandcamp project – the weapon of choice for most egg-punk aficionados.

At its core, in fact, the album is the sonic manifesto of an incredibly expansive, exciting band. Drawing upon everything from the no-wave stylings of Lizzy Mercier Descloux or ESG to much more contemporary influences like Snooper or Chicago’s Clickbait, the record is an unsuspecting soup of different sounds and styles.

Space-age synths are placed side by side with heavy, old-school basslines, and wailing experiment vocal effects on tracks like the stunning closer, ‘Ketchup’, while others keep things stripped back and basic, evoking the image of a ramshackled local venue and the endearing camaraderie of a local rock and roll scene.

Standout Track: ‘Power Snoozer’

The Verdict: With Bingo!, La Sécurité have not only succeeded in making a stormer of an art-punk rock and roll record, but they have also provided a much-needed antidote to the banality and photocopied nature of the unrelenting post-punk airwaves. It might not reach the dizzying heights of chart fame, but it is nevertheless one of the most exciting rock albums to emerge this year.
