Kris Kristofferson, legendary American singer, dies aged 88
The beloved American country singer and songwriter Kris Kristofferson passed away on September 28th, 2024, at the age of 88.
A vital part of the Highwaymen, along with the likes of Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson, Kristofferson shaped the contemporary landscape of country music by reconfiguring established Nashville frameworks and facilitating new ways of expressing artistic sentiments within the genre. Noted for the undercurrents of vulnerability that defined his evocative lyricism, Kristofferson’s works like ‘Help Me Make It Through the Night’ and ‘Me and Bobby McGee’ continue to mesmerise younger generations of audiences.
In addition to his highly successful music career, Kristofferson was also highly active in the film industry, appearing in several iconic projects such as Pat Garrett and Billy the Kid, where he appeared alongside another music legend, Bob Dylan. He also starred in Michael Cimino’s highly misunderstood masterpiece Heaven’s Gate, which only recently underwent a significant critical re-evaluation.
According to multiple reports, Kristofferson had suffered from memory issues, which were misdiagnosed by doctors who claimed it was Alzheimer’s or dementia. Only in 2016 was it clarified that the musician actually had Lyme disease.
In an interview, Kristofferson’s third wife, Lisa Meyers, opened up about the situation: “He was taking all these medications for things he doesn’t have, and they all have side effects.“ Despite the obvious problems, she felt that on “some days, he’s perfectly normal, and it’s easy to forget that he is even battling anything.”
Releasing a joint statement to announce his passing, Kristofferson’s family said: “It is with a heavy heart that we share the news our husband/father/grandfather, Kris Kristofferson, passed away peacefully on Saturday, September 28th, at home. We’re all so blessed for our time with him. Thank you for loving him all these many years, and when you see a rainbow, know he’s smiling down at us all.”
Kristofferson is survived by his wife, Lisa, and eight children.
