Kevin Smith has revealed the first exciting look behind the scenes of the long-awaited Clerks III, posting an image to Instagram of himself and the rest of the film cast.
Initially writing the script for the third instalment in 2013, Smith shelved the project after a falling out with Jeff Anderson, who plays Randal in the first two films. Having made up, script work continued, followed by the beginning of production.
Captioned, “How I Spent My 51st Birthday! Clerks III, Day 1…Thanks to that sweet @lionsgate cash, we *are* supposed to be here today!”, Smith’s picture featured him, Jeff Anderson, Brian O’Halloran, Jason Mewes, Trevor Fehrman and Austin Zajur.
Back in 2019, Kevin Smith revealed that part of the film was inspired by the life-changing heart attack he experienced in 2018. Speaking to The Wrap, the filmmaker revealed that the film would centre around Randal recovering from a heart attack and a subsequent mid-life crisis. “Randal has a heart attack, decides that he came so close to death, and his life has meant nothing, there’s nobody to memorialise him, he has no family or anything like that,” he explained.
Continuing, the director explained, “And in the recovery, while under fentanyl, he comes to the conclusion at mid-life, having almost died, having worked in a movie store his whole life and watched other people’s movies, he tells Dante, ‘I think we need to make a movie’. So Dante and Randal make Clerks. That’s the story of Clerks 3.”
Kevin Smith’s film career was sparked on his 21st birthday when he saw Richard Linklater’s comedy Slacker and was inspired to become a filmmaker, stating, “It was the movie that got me off my ass; it was the movie that lit a fire under me, the movie that made me think, ‘Hey, I could be a filmmaker.’ And I had never seen a movie like that before ever in my life”.
