Kevin Costner pays tribute to “wonderful” ‘Dances With Wolves’ co-star Graham Greene

Following the passing of Graham Greene, his Dances With Wolves co-star Kevin Costner has described him as a “master at work”.

Earlier this week, it was sadly confirmed that the Canadian actor had passed away aged 73 following a long illness. His agent said in a statement: “He was a great man of morals, ethics and character and will be eternally missed. You are finally free.”

While Greene began working in stage productions in the 1970s, mainstream roles for him as a First Nations actor were limited until the opportunity to co-star in Dances With Wolves in 1990 came along, which transformed his career.

He secured a nomination in the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ category at the Academy Awards for his performance, and also went on to appear in movies such as ThunderheartDie Hard with a Vengeance, and The Green Mile.

Now, Costner has taken to Instagram to share a poignant scene between their characters in Dances With Wolves, which remains close to his heart. “A few things come to mind when I think of Graham Greene and our time together on Dances With Wolves,” he began.

Costner continued, “I think of how willing he was to learn the Lakota language. I think of my joy when I heard that his work on the film was recognized with an Academy Awards nomination. And I think of this scene in particular, when he was able to establish so much about the relationship between Dunbar and the natives with so few words. He was a master at work and a wonderful human being.”

The Hollywood star poignantly concluded, “I’m grateful to have been witness to this part of his lasting legacy. Rest in peace, Graham.”
