Kerry King says his new solo album is “an extension of Slayer”

Ahead of the release of his debut solo record, former Slayer guitarist Kerry King suggested that the new project is a continuation of his work with the thrash metal band.

King was a founding member of Slayer and remained with the band until its dissolution in 2019. Since then, the guitarist has been working on his solo music. His debut record has been completed and is expected to arrive in 2024.

Speaking with Metal Hammer about the new album, King suggested that he had “no desire” to divert from the sound he honed with Slayer. “If I wasn’t in Slayer, I would be a Slayer fan,” he stated, “So yes, I think it’s an extension of Slayer, and I think a lot of people will think it might have been the next record.”

The metal guitarist suggested that this assumption might have some truth to it. “I guess maybe 80% of it would have been,” he admitted, “maybe it would have been exactly what I’m putting on this one.”

The former Slayer songwriter sees his solo offering as a particular extension of the band’s final album, Repentless. “In my eyes, I think it’s a definite extension, a follow up to [Slayer’s 2015 final album] Repentless for sure,” he concluded.

King is yet to reveal any of his musical collaborators for the record, though he did state that he hopes they will remain in the band “for its entirety.” As for one-off guest appearances, King has avoided them entirely due to their live complications.
