Kate Hudson confirms she turned down role in ‘Spider-Man’
Kate Hudson has confirmed the rumour that she turned down the role of Mary Jane in the 2002 hit superhero movie, Spider-Man.
The revelation came about while Hudson was chatting on the Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen show. During her appearance, the 46-year-old star was asked to confirm the rumour that she turned down the role.
She cavaeted her response with a confession that she didn’t enjoy wallowing in regret: “You know, it’s so funny. When people say these things, it doesn’t feel good to talk about it, because the people who are in the movie are the right people, and your circumstances in life happen the way they happen. But yes, I did.”
Hudson continued, “And now that I look back, it’s one of those things where I’m like, ‘You know, that would’ve been nice to be in the Spider-Man movie.'”
The 2002 movie was a huge success; Kirsten Dunst starred in the role of Mary-Jane opposite Tobey Maguire, who played the titular character. The pair shared the limelight in Sam Raimi’s 2004 follow-up, Spider-Man 2, and 2007’s Spider-Man 3.
However, Hudson had a great reason for turning the opportunity down; she wanted to star opposite the late Heath Ledger in the film Four Feathers instead.
On the show, Hudson confessed: “But at the same time, I did a movie called Four Feathers. I got to meet Heath Ledger who became a very good friend, and I got an experience that I would have never had.”
She finished, “So, part of me is like, ‘Life happens exactly the way it’s supposed to,’ and so I’m grateful for it. But I do look at that [and] I’m like, ‘Aw, it would’ve been fun to be her.’”
Hudson’s next project, Song Sung Blue, sees her star alongside The Greatest Showman actor, Hugh Jackman, as they take on the true story of a Neil Diamond tribute duo who faced much tragedy as they began their life together.
