Kate Bush confirms she’s planning a new album
Legendary English singer-songwriter Kate Bush has revealed that she plans to return to music and is “very keen” to make a new album.
Bush revealed all when she gave a rare interview on the Today programme on BBC Radio 4. On October 25th, the singer was on the station to promote a new short film she’s written and directed to raise money for children affected by war.
A four-minute animation titled Little Shrew, the deeply moving movie is set to her 2011 track ‘Snowflake’, as the eponymous animal searches for hope in a war-torn city. It makes you reflect on the many wars currently ongoing and the children suffering across the globe.
At the end of the film, the following message reads; “You could be hope for a child caught up in war. Please donate to War Child”.
Bush explained to the programme that she started working on Little Shrew not long after the Ukrainian war broke out. Describing it as a shock, she added: “It’s been such a long period of peace we’d all been living through. And I just felt Iwanted to make a little animation … to draw attention to how horrific it is for children.”
Elsewhere, Bush revealed that she’s “very keen” to make a new album. She said: “I’ve got lots of ideas … it’s been a long time.” Notably, her most recent albums arrived in the form of 2011’s Director’s Cut and 50 Words for Snow, the latter of which contained ‘Snowflake’.
Bush, who has famously shied away from the limelight, released her debut album in 1978, The Kick Inside. It was co-produced by Pink Floyd guitarist David Gilmour and featured the lead single ‘Wuthering Heights’. She has since become one of the most successful female British artists of all time and a pioneer in breaking down the gender standards of the era she emerged. She was the first British solo female artist to top the UK Albums Chart and the first female artist to enter it at number one.
In 2022, Bush enjoyed a resurgence with a new generation after ‘Running Up That Hill’ was included in the hit Netflix sci-fi drama Stranger Things. It went to number one in the UK and three on the US Billboard Hot 100, with the album the song is from, Hounds of Love, becoming her first to top a Billboard chart.
Kate Bush provides update on new album
Bush has now told BBC Radio 4 that she has “lots of ideas” for material and “I’m really looking forward to getting back into that creative space”.
However, when Bush was asked if she’s working on new material, she sadly replied: “Not at the moment, but I’ve been caught up doing a lot of archive work over the last few years, redesigning our website, putting a lyric book together. And I’m very keen to start working on a new album when I’ve got this finished. I’ve got lots of ideas and I’m really looking forward to getting back into that creative space, it’s been a long time.”
Regarding whether she’d been thinking about working on new material for a while, she added: “Yes it is, really. Particularly [in] the last year, I’ve felt really ready to start doing something new.”
At this stage, there is no timeframe for new music by Bush, however, the fact that it’s now occupying her mind is a positive step in the right direction.
