Julio Iglesias denies sexual abuse claims of two former employees
Spanish singer Julio Iglesias has denied claims made by two of his former female employees that he sexually abused them, insisting that he has never “abused, coerced or disrespected any woman”.
The alleged assaults, which were said to take place in 2021, subjected the workers to “inappropriate touching, insults and humiliation … in an atmosphere of control and constant harassment.”
The allegations were announced after a three-year investigation by Spanish news site, elDiario.es, and Spanish-language TV network, Univision Noticias.
The women were reportedly employed at Iglesias’ Caribbean mansions in the Dominican Republic and the Bahamas. One is a domestic worker, and the other works as a physical therapist.
The two women have filed a formal complaint with prosecutors at Spain’s highest criminal court.
According to the submitted documents, their experiences “are supported by extensive documentary evidence, such as photographs, call logs, WhatsApp messages, visas, medical reports and other documents.”
The two women, who have opted to go by the names Laura and Rebeca, have explained the need to come forward: “I think by taking legal action we’re sending a message to all the victims of this person – Julio Iglesias – so that they can speak out and believe in justice,” Laura said, as per The Guardian.
She added, “It’s so they can understand that this wasn’t something that just happened to them.”
On January 16th, the 82-year-old star responded to the allegations on Instagram, writing, “With great regret, I am responding to the allegations from two people who used to work in my house.”
He continued, “I have never abused, coerced or disrespected any woman. These accusations are absolutely false and pain me deeply.”
Iglesias insisted that he would “defend my dignity against this serious affront” and thanked “so very many dear people for their messages of love and support”.
