Julia Roberts thinks Richard Gere’s ‘Pretty Woman’ character would have died by now
The eminent actor Julia Roberts has opined that Edward, the wealthy entrepreneur character portrayed by Richard Gere in 1990’s Pretty Woman, would have died by now in real life.
The classic romantic comedy follows the story of Edward, a rich yet friendly man who hires Vivian, a sex worker portrayed by Roberts, to escort him to social mixers. As the pair fall in love, they struggle to navigate the middle ground between their disparate lives.
In a new interview with CBS Mornings, Roberts discussed where she thought characters from some of her most famous movies would be today.
“I think he passed away peacefully in his sleep from a heart attack, smiling,” Roberts said, guessing the fate of Edward from Pretty Woman. “And now she runs his business.”
Turning her attention to the 1999 movie Runaway Bride, in which Roberts also starred opposite Gere, she had a much more optimistic outlook. “They stay together,” she said. “He doesn’t die in this one. They’re gonna stay together.”
Roberts then addressed Notting Hill, the 1999 romantic comedy in which she starred as the famous actress Anna Scott opposite Hugh Grant’s bookshop-owning character, Will.
“She’s retired. She has six children and has maintained her waist size, amazingly,” Roberts said. “And yeah… he runs the bookshop still. And now there’s a little knitting annexe to the bookshop that she runs.”
Roberts is currently promoting her latest movie, the psychological thriller Leave The World Behind. The movie, also starring Mahershala Ali, Ethan Hawke and Kevin Bacon, is available to stream now on Netflix. Watch the trailer below.
