Julia Roberts rejected huge Tom Hanks and Daniel Day-Lewis movies

Throughout the 1990s, the likes of Tom Hanks and Julia Roberts dominated the realm of American blockbuster cinema, while Daniel Day-Lewis was making waves in the United Kingdom. Roberts recently revealed that she rejected offers to star alongside the two actors in two classic movies.

When appearing on Watch What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, Roberts was asked by a fan about which movies she had passed up on that went on to be big successes and led her to regret her original decision.

Roberts, however, admitted to a sense of fate when it comes to her career, so she has tried not to feel regrets over the movies she has and hasn’t taken on.

“None that I have regrets about because I feel like it’s all destiny, I do believe that,” she said. “But what have I passed on that went to be great and wonderful, though maybe it wouldn’t have been as great and wonderful with me?

Roberts then named the two big movies starring Tom Hanks and Daniel Day-Lewis that she decided to reject: “You’ve Got Mail, The Last of the Mohicans, I can’t think of anything else.”

You’ve Got Mail is the 1998 romantic comedy by Nora Ephron. It tells of two people who develop an online romance whilst being unaware of their business rivalry. Meanwhile, The Last of the Mohicans is Michael Mann’s 1992 epic historical action drama set in the French and Indian War of North America in 1757.

From there, the actor explained how several of her contemporaries had passed up on certain opportunities that fell into her lap, leading to some of her most celebrated performances.

She signed off on the matter, “Meg Ryan was supposed to be in Steel Magnolias, and she was still filming When Harry Met Sally and so I got that part. Cate Blanchett was meant to be in Closer, but she got pregnant, and then I got that part, so I’ve lucked into some good stuff.”
