Julia Garner believes Madonna biopic will “still happen” despite cancellation
Julia Garner has said she is still confident that a Madonna biopic will happen, despite the original project being shelved over two years ago.
The actor was speaking on a recent episode of the SmartLess podcast amid the release of her latest film, the Marvel blockbuster The Fantastic Four: First Steps. When asked about the future of the Madonna movie, she said: “That’s supposed to still happen.”
Garner’s casting in the proposed project was announced back in 2020. However, three years later, these plans were shelved to accommodate the pop star’s world tour, as Madonna herself was set to direct the film.
Despite this, Garner still seemed keen to take on the role, explaining that her casting “just came about” naturally, even though she wasn’t fully trained for the demands of the part. “I kind of just wanted to see if I could do it, because I wasn’t a trained dancer and I had to learn how to dance and then dance in front of her and convince her that I can dance, basically, and sing,” she said. “And sing with her!”
Even though there are still major questions over the future and viability of the biopic, the actor reasoned that the delay shouldn’t cause concern as “anything that’s great…takes a long time.”
The idea that the film had been fully scrapped was heightened even more in recent months, when in May it was announced that Madonna was working with Shawn Levy to develop a series about her life and career for Netflix.
Madonna has been committed to putting her story on the screen in some form throughout the current decade. When plans for the original biopic were revealed five years ago, she said: “I want to convey the incredible journey that life has taken me on as an artist, a musician, a dancer—a human being, trying to make her way in this world.”
