Josh Brolin to star opposite Glen Powell in Edgar Wright’s ‘The Running Man’
There is a new Edgar Wright movie on the horizon, and Josh Brolin will be playing the villain in the forthcoming production. The project, The Running Man, is set for release in November, 2025, with Glen Powell, Katy O’Brian, Daniel Ezra, and Karl Glusman also announced as cast members.
The film is based on Stephen King’s 1982 novel of the same name, which he initially published under the name Richard Bachman. In 1987, the book loosely inspired a feature film starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, María Conchita Alonso, and Richard Dawson.
Directed by Paul Michael Glaser, the original film received mixed reviews and made only a slight profit at the box office. It isn’t one of Schwarzenegger’s most memorable roles, but one that featured a great concept at its core. Therefore, there is palpable excitement surrounding how Wright, who has excelled in the action and thriller genres in the past, will adapt King’s novel.
Brolin, known for roles in No Country For Old Men, True Grit, and Milk, is now in the final stages of landing a role in the movie, with some sources speculating that he will be playing the role of the antagonist. The news of Brolin’s involvement was actually announced by the star during an appearance at Comic-Con in New York.
The movie promises to explore one man’s quest for survival after he signs up for a reality show named The Running Man. Desperate to win the cash prize so that he can afford treatment for his daughter, who is seriously ill, he must avoid being killed by the hunters who have been sent to make attempts on his life for a month straight.
Commenting on the state of healthcare and the morbid curiosity that fuels the world’s reality television addiction, The Running Man is full of both food for thought and entertaining thrills. Wright will no doubt provide high-octane action, something he has shown a skill for in movies like Baby Driver.
The filmmaker has co-written the screenplay with Michael Bacall, who previously penned Scott Pilgrim vs. the World with Wright. It comes after Wright released two films in 2021: Last Night in Soho and the documentary The Sparks Brothers. While the latter was received well, the former garnered a much more mixed reaction.
The Running Man is scheduled for release on November 21st. 2025, which is also the same year that King’s novel is set in.
