Joseph Kosinski to direct new ‘Miami Vice’ movie
Top Gun: Maverick‘s Joseph Kosinski is set to direct a new movie adaptation of the Miami Vice franchise for Universal Pictures.
The director will helm the film, while Dan Gilroy will write the script and Dylan Clark Productions will produce. It comes as the next project in the pipeline for Kosinski after Top Gun: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise as the world’s most famous naval aviator, grossed an astonishing $1.49 billion at the box office upon its release in 2022.
For the part of Miami Vice, the upcoming movie is the next chapter in the beloved franchise, which originally ran as a TV series created by Anthony Yerkovich which ran for six years from 1984 to 1990 on NBC, starring Don Johnson and Phillip Michael Thomas in the lead roles as a pair of undercover police officers in Miami, who became synonymous with their flair for pastel-coloured suits.
The series was given a reboot in 2006 with its first feature film adaptation starring Jamie Foxx and Colin Farrell, which was a box office hit, earning $163.7 million in global revenue at the time. It was directed by the series’ original executive producer, Michael Mann.
Currently, it is not known which actors have been cast in the leading roles as the Miami police officers.
Kosinski had been attached to the project in some capacity since 2024, but he is already set to direct Apple conspiracy thriller UFO, as well as the Brad Pitt-fronted racing drama F1, which is set to hit the big screen in June.
It is not known currently when filming for the new Miami Vice movie will commence, nor has a release date yet been revealed.
