José González announces new album, ‘Against The Dying Of The Light’
José González has announced a new album named Against The Dying Of The Light, along with sharing the lead single of the title track.
It marks the first new music from the musician in nearly five years, following the release of his previous album Local Valley in 2021.
In that time, González says his artistic standpoint has changed drastically as the world has shifted into a space of new ideologies and darker global powers than ever before. As such, the album was “born out of deep conviction as much as artistic choices,” according to its press release.
Speaking about the impact of the album, González said: “Against the Dying of the Light is a reflection on how we create hurdles to human flourishing by clinging stubbornly to dogmatic ideologies where people follow dudes who pretend to know shit they don’t know.”
He added: “These are songs about how we can navigate humanity towards flourishing on an individual and a collective level. They can be listened to just for the sounds, harmonies, and rhythms but the lyrics are meant to inspire people to engage and take action by collaborating to solve collective problems.”
Alongside this, González has also shared the lead single from the album, which takes the same name as the title. He said it serves as a reflection of the current geopolitical situation in the world, but also what the public can do about it.
“It’s a song reflecting on humanity in 2025; about accepting who we are and what led us here, since the past can’t be changed,” González explained. “Then about refocusing our attention on the challenges ahead, like pervert incentives and algorithms that aren’t in line with human flourishing.”
For the release of Against The Dying Of The Light, and in the spirit of the album, González has signed himself up to a charity initiative called the 10% Pledge, where he has publicly committed to donating ten per cent of his earnings to a range of organisations fighting extreme poverty.
González’s new album, Against The Dying Of The Light, is set to be released on March 27th, 2026.
