Joni Mitchell set to be given prestigious honour at the Juno Awards

Joni Mitchell is set to be honoured with the ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ at next year’s Juno Awards, it has been announced.

Mitchell will become only the third recipient in history of the highest honour from the Juno Awards, the Canadian equivalent of the Grammys, following on from Pierre Juneau in 1989, and Anne Murray in 2025, after the prize was brought back into the ceremony.

The news of the singer’s latest honour was revealed on November 24th, and she will subsequently receive the award at the ceremony on March 29th, 2026, at the TD Coliseum on Hamilton, Ontario.

The ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ from the Junos will represent the newest accolade to be added to Mitchell’s collection, as she was the previous recipient of the Grammys ‘Lifetime Achievement Award’ in 2002, as well as having been inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame in 1981.

It comes as the folk singer has been making an occasional return to live performances over the past three years, following on from a serious health scare with she suffering a ruptured brain aneurysm a decade ago.

Most recently, she made a surprise appearance at the Fire Aid benefit concert at the beginning of the year, supporting the victims of the devastating wildfires in California, as well as performing at Clive Davis’ pre-Grammy gala in February.

Elsewhere in news of next year’s Juno Awards, it has been announced that R&B singer Nelly Furtado will be inducted into the Canadian Music Hall of Fame during the ceremony, shortly after she revealed that she will be stepping back from the spotlight to focus on other projects.

The singer said in a statement in October: “I have enjoyed my career immensely, and I still love writing music as I have always seen it as a hobby I was lucky enough to make into a career. I’ll identify as a songwriter forever.”

Last year’s Juno Awards hit the headlines after its host, Michael Bublé, made an impassioned speech against Donald Trump and his proposals to transform Canada into the 51st US state, saying emphatically: “We are not for sale”.
