Jon Stewart to return to ‘The Daily Show’

Almost a decade after his departure from The Daily Show, Jon Stewart has been announced to return to the programme.

Stewart is set to make his comeback on February 12th, and will host the programme every Monday evening throughout 2024. The comedian will also work as an executive producer on the show, which still doesn’t have a full-time presenter following the departure of Trevor Noah in 2022.

Since Noah left the Comedy Central programme, a rotating cast of comedians, including Sarah Silverman and Chelsea Handler, have filled the seat on a temporary basis. However, nobody has been appointed Noah’s permanent successor. The South African took over from Stewart in 2015 and lasted seven years as host.

In a statement, Chris McCarthy, President/CEO of Showtime/MTV Entertainment Studios, said of Stewart’s return: “Jon Stewart is the voice of our generation, and we are honored to have him return to Comedy Central’s The Daily Show to help us all make sense of the insanity and division roiling the country as we enter the election season.”

“In our age of staggering hypocrisy and performative politics, Jon is the perfect person to puncture the empty rhetoric and provide much-needed clarity with his brilliant wit,” the message continued.

Following news of his return, Stewart took to X, formerly Twitter, to reveal he’s “decided to enter the transfer portal for my last year of eligibility.”

Stewart’s decision to come back home to The Daily Show in time for an election year comes after Apple TV+ decided against renewing his current affairs programme, The Problem, for a third season. Over its the span of two series, it earned five Emmy nominations.
