Over the years, American actor Johnny Depp has appeared in masterpieces like Edward Scissorhands and Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas among others. He has achieved commercial as well as critical success for his brilliant renditions of quirky characters like Captain Jack Sparrow, winning several coveted awards in the process. Those accolades include a Golden Globe win, multiple British Academy Film Awards and Oscar bids.
In the upcoming San Sebastian Film Festival, which will take place in Spain next month, Depp will add another prestigious prize to his already overflowing list of achievements.
It has been announced that Johnny Depp will be the recipient of the festival’s highest honour – the Donostia Award. After this feat, Depp has entered the pantheon of other great actors who have also received the Donostia Award including the likes of Dennis Hopper, Michael Caine, Robert De Niro and Viggo Mortensen to name a few.
The festival’s director José Luis Rebordinos felt the need to explain the decision regarding Depp’s win due to the controversy generated by his legal conflicts with Amber Heard: “The role of a film festival is not to judge the conduct of members of the film industry. The role of a film festival is to select the most relevant and interesting films of the year and to extend recognition to those who have made an extraordinary contribution to the art of film.”
Adding, “The Donostia Award to Johnny Depp is our recognition of a great actor, a man of cinema with a great career, who visited us last year as producer of the film Crock of Gold: A Few Round With Shane Macgowan by Julien Temple, which won the Special Jury Prize.”
