Johnny Depp claims his life turned into a “soap opera” due to Amber Heard trial

During a press conference in San Sebastian on September 24th for his latest directorial project, Johnny Depp alluded to his past legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard, claiming it turned his life into a “soap opera”.

The conference discussed Depp’s new biographical film, Modì, Three Days on the Wing of Madness, which marks almost three decades since his first directorial effort with 1997’s The Brave. During the conference, Depp was asked about any potential comparisons between himself and the film’s subject —the Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani — to which he said there were “a number of things” he had to go through which were similar.

“I think we’ve all been through a number of things, ultimately,” he said per Variety, continuing with a subtle reference to his previous tribulations with Heard, “Maybe yours didn’t turn into a soap opera, televised in fact, but we all experience and go through what we go through.”

In recent months, Depp has addressed several details regarding the aftermath of the trial, mainly focusing on the importance of some of his latest projects, like Modi and the French-language film Jeanne du Barry. While accepting an award for his performance in the latter back in June, he expressed his gratitude for his current position in the film industry and described his journey as “sometimes tragic.”

“The work that I do is inspired by all of you who have been along on this long road and comprehended,” he said. Depp continued: “It’s always especially humbling when recognition for your endeavours comes directly from the hearts of the people, the hearts and minds who’ve joined me on this long mystical, magical, sometimes tragic – yet never boring journey.”

Depp also thanked everyone who allowed him to continue working in the industry despite the ongoing controversy, reinforcing the sentiment that his fans will always be “the drive to keep pushing forward” in his career.

What happened during the trial?

In 2022, Depp and Heard entered a high-profile, televised defamation trial stemming from an op-ed Heard wrote for The Washington Post about domestic abuse. Although she didn’t explicitly name Depp in the piece, the actor sued her for defamation, which she countersued, alleging he had defamed her through statements made by his legal team.

Throughout the trial, each party could deliver their recollections of specific events to a jury and live audience. In the beginning, Depp claimed Heard falsely accused him of domestic abuse, which significantly harmed his reputation and image. Heard accused the actor of abusing her during their marriage, describing several instances in connection with his substance abuse.

As the trial unravelled, several distinctively different accounts of events surfaced. At the end of the court case, the jury ruled in favour of Depp, awarding him $10 million in compensatory damages and $5 million in punitive damages.

However, they also partially ruled in favour of Heard in her countersuit, awarding her $2 million in compensatory damages.
