Joey Image, the iconic drummer of punk rock band The Misfits, has reportedly died after battling liver cancer at the age of 63.
Image, whose cause of death has yet to be confirmed, was amid a long battle against liver cancer after being diagnosed in 2016.
Image, who was associated with a number of different punk bands, joined The Misfits in 1978 and was famously the man on the sticks for both the band’s now iconic ‘Horror Business’ and “Night of the Living Dead’ sessions.
As the drummer attempted to fight cancer, a GoFundMe was launched as a bid to help him pay for medical expenses. The crowdfunding campaign, who was working as a driver amid his cancer fight, was attempting to achieve treatment at the University of Miami with hopes of landing a liver transplant.
“Last year, Joey was diagnosed with liver cancer. He’s seeking treatment at the University of Miami, and is possibly a candidate for liver transplant, but these procedures are incredibly expensive and often have devastating side effects,” the statement read.
“Joey is currently driving for a living, but is uncertain whether or not he’ll be able to continue this line of work once his treatment begins.
“With this campaign, we’re hoping to raise funds to cover his medical expenses, and a portion of his living costs, including rent, food, and transportation.
“It’s not often we are able to give back to the artists who’ve shaped our lives, but this is an opportunity to help someone truly in need. If you’ve ever listened to Misfits records on repeat, or met a friend/spouse at a horror punk show, or were inspired to start your own band because of ‘Horror Business’ – please consider even a small donation.”
Unfortunately, Image lost his fight against the disease and passed away on June 1st.
