Todd Phillips’ DC comics thrill ride Joker had a habit of splitting audiences when it was released but the fact remains that those audiences were huge. Having sent box office sales over $1 billion, there’s no surprise that Warner Bros. are keen to maximise the project and have offered Joaquin Phoenix $50 million for two more films.
The two projects would be sequels of the soon-to-be-iconic 2019 film and offer Phoenix a chance to reprise his Oscar-winning role as Arthur Fleck, Batman’s greatest villain. Mirror reports that the studio is ready to throw money at Phoenix to secure his signature.
While the initial sum does seem a handsome reward for two films, the films undoubted box office appeal will surely see Warner Bros. in the black in no time at all. But, sorry DC fans, not everything is set in stone yet, “It’s still being negotiated,” reports the Mirror from a studio insider “but the scripts are being written and Joaquin is very engaged with it”.
The publication continued, “They plan to make two sequels in the next four years, with a long-term commitment to Joaquin and his Joker director Todd Phillips and producer Bradley Cooper. It’s all about getting Joaquin to accept the terms—and the biggest payday of his career by far.” Warner Bros. would be aiming to have the films made for 2022 and 2024.
Rumours of a sequel to Joker seemingly sprung up as soon as the audience left the cinema and while Phoenix has previously suggested his interest in doing one Phillips once commented, “Obviously, sequels have been discussed when a movie that cost $60 million made $1 billion, but we have not had any serious conversations about it.”
It appears as if now, those talks are ongoing and two new films are on their way.
