Joan Jett announces death of “one of a kind” drummer Thommy Price
Joan Jett has confirmed the death of her former drummer, Thommy Price, aged 68.
Taking to Instagram, Jett shared a video montage of Price drumming alongside a portion of her acceptance at the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2015 when she singled out his talent.
In the speech, she said: “Thanks to all of The Blackhearts throughout the years, especially the great Thommy Price, who for 32 years has been the heartbeat, the pulse, the roaring compulsion of this band. Thommy should have been inducted with us tonight, and I want to recognise him in front of you all now.”
Jett also captioned the post on Instagram, “We lost a member of the Blackheart family- the one of a kind Thommy Price. Thommy was a legendary drummer who was a Blackheart for 4 decades. He was a drummer’s drummer and admired by so many.”
Her emotional statement continued, “Our hearts are heavy. Sending love to his beautiful family. We love you Thommy.”
Price joined The Blackhearts in 1987 and remained part of the band until 2017. Before pairing up with Jett, he had already worked with Billy Idol and Scandal, which had landed him the gig with the former singer of The Runaways.
On Facebook, Price’s wife, Stefunny, confirmed he died on October 10th, describing him as a “devoted husband and proud father and powerhouse drummer and songwriter”. She also noted, “His energy, kindness, humor, and unmatched rhythm left an indelible mark on everyone who knew him and every stage he graced.”
Billy Idol has also honoured his former drummer on Instagram, fondly reflecting upon their time together as bandmates before adding, “Thommy was a friend as well as musical compatriot who brought immense talent and heart to everything he did. And I will miss him.”
No details have been revealed regarding Price’s cause of death.
The rock drummer is survived by his wife Stefunny and daughter Brooklyn.
