Jesse Eisenberg rejected ‘The Social Reckoning’ as he didn’t want to be associated with Mark Zuckerberg
Jesse Eisenberg has opened up on why he chose not to return to play his breakout role of Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Reckoning.
The actor gained widespread recognition, as well as an Oscar nomination for ‘Best Actor’, in his role as the Facebook founder in David Fincher’s The Social Network back in 2010.
However, with a sequel now planned from Aaron Sorkin, who wrote the first film, Eisenberg has flatly refused to return to his critically acclaimed role, with Jeremy Strong taking over the part of Zuckerberg in The Social Reckoning.
Opening up on the reasons behind this in a new interview with Variety, the actor insisted his reasons for not returning were less to do with the film itself than the prospect of playing the controversial CEO again.
First heaping praise on Sorkin, Eisenberg said, “We talked about doing the movie for several days,” before noting, “If you’re not going to do something with him, it feels almost like you’re letting down America.”
Despite this, the actor still expressed his reluctance towards playing Zuckerberg again, as he continued: “I just told him I’m moving in different directions in my life. I don’t want to be associated with that character, but all of my reasons for not wanting to do the movie have nothing to do with how wonderful the movie is, and will be, and I’m sure is already.”
The Social Reckoning is set to be released in October this year, and charts the 2021 Facebook leak in which whistleblower Frances Haughen revealed the company’s practices of being aware of the harms that its platforms were posing by harming young people and spreading misinformation, but still prioritising profit.
Written and directed by Sorkin, the film is set to star Mikey Madison as Haughen, Strong as Zuckerberg, as well as an ensemble cast including Jeremy Allen White, Bill Burr, Wunmi Mosaku, and Billy Magnussen.
The Social Reckoning is set to be released on October 9th, 2026.
