Jennifer Lawrence reveals how “cancel culture” inspired Miss Piggy movie
Jennifer Lawrence has revealed that cancel culture was unexpectedly an inspiration for her upcoming Miss Piggy movie.
Earlier this week, Lawrence announced that she was joining forces with Oscar-winner Emma Stone to produce a spin-off movie on The Muppets character, with Tony-winner Cole Escola penning the screenplay.
The Die My Love actor made the revelation during an appearance on the Las Culturistas podcast, as well as teasing that she and Stone are hoping to make cameos in the film.
Now, during an episode of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, Lawrence explained how the idea ofr the movie was born during the Covid-19 pandemic, explaining, “So, during lockdown, one of my good friends who is not in the industry – it was also kind of around cancel culture.”
She continued, “It was like both things were kind of happening at once. We were all locked up in our rooms, naughty people were being locked up in prison.”
While the story of Miss Piggy that will be told in the movie isn’t a story about her fall from grace after being cancelled, Lawrence noted, “Miss Piggy is a feminist icon, and she said it would be so funny if Miss Piggy got canceled. Now, that is not the plot, necessarily, but it got the wheels turning.”
Lawrence then explained that “there hasn’t actually been” a Miss Piggy spin-off before, which is why she felt attracted to the project. She also shared of Stone’s involvement, “So, I started kind of producing it. But Emma Stone is the Muppet-head. Also, Emma Stone is a shark … I’m, just like, the ideas guy. So, I went to her to be like, ‘What do we do?’ So, now Cole is writing it, and they’re perfect.”
There is currently no timeline on when the upcoming Miss Piggy movie will arrive. Lawrence is currently busy promoting the Lynne Ramsay movie, Die My Love, which arrives in UK cinemas on November 14th, 2025.
Then, early next year, she will begin shooting the new Martin Scorsese movie, What Happens At Night, which also stars Leonardo DiCaprio.
