Jennifer Aniston reflects on Matthew Perry’s addiction struggles: “I’m glad he’s out of that pain”
Jennifer Aniston has heartbreakingly reflected on the death of her Friends co-star Matthew Perry, admitting, “I’m glad he’s out of that pain.”
On October 28th, 2023, Perry was found dead in his hot tub at his Pacific Palisades home by his assistant. Following a postmortem, it was ruled that ketamine was the main cause of his death.
In May 2024, the Los Angeles Police Department opened its investigation into Perry’s cause of death, seeking to find out how the actor gained access to the elevated levels of ketamine in his bloodstream, far higher than the infusion therapy he’d been using as a treatment for depression. This then resulted in five individuals being charged, including Dr Salvador Plasencia, who recently pled guilty to drug distribution.
Perry was open about his struggles with addiction, including extensively in his 2022 memoir Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.
Now, in a new interview with Vanity Fair, Aniston has spoken about her late friend’s struggles, stating, “We did everything we could when we could.”
She then solemnly admitted, “But it almost felt like we’d been mourning Matthew for a long time because his battle with that disease was a really hard one for him to fight. As hard as it was for all of us and for the fans, there’s a part of me that thinks this is better.”
Aniston added of Perry’s struggles, which plagued the actor’s life for a number of decades, “I’m glad he’s out of that pain.”
In the immediate aftermath of Perry’s death, Aniston shared a lengthy, heartfelt tribute, writing, “He was such a part of our DNA. We were always the 6 of us. This was a chosen family that forever changed the course of who we were and what our path was going to be.”
Aniston also wrote: “Matty, I love you so much and I know you are now completely at peace and out of any pain. I talk to you every day… sometimes I can almost hear you saying ‘could you BE any crazier?’ Rest little brother. You always made my day…”
