Jay Som shares double A-side ‘A Thousand Words’ and ‘Can’t Sleep’

Jay Som has been one of our favourite artists in recent years, following the singer’s ability to transcend bedroom pop into something wholly more enriching. Now, Som has shared a brand new double A-side and it arrives as our Track of the Day.

The two songs in question are leftover from the sessions that led to Som’s 2019 record Anak Ko and sees the singer, real name Melina Duterte, stand out once again as one of the most candid artists around.

The release comes ahead of rearranged tour dates from 2019 which were cancelled over Som’s mental health, at the time stating, “I need to take this time to get my mental health in order and appreciate the patience.”

A double A-side it most certainly is and both songs pack a sizeable punch. ‘A Thousand Words’ is the first track up and is a classic piece of work from Jay Som as she effortlessly traverses her expression with simple and delicate pop overtones.

That track is then backed by ‘Can’t Sleep’ which explodes in a cacophony of dream-like arrangments. Both songs are a warming reminder of all that is good about Jay Som.

It makes for an incredibly astute release and hints that any further album from Som is likely to be another one dripping in honesty and honed sonics.
