The return of Japanese Breakfast is one that perhaps signifies that 2021 may well be the start of some good years ahead. The acclaimed singer-songwriter, AKA Michelle Zauner, took to The Tonight Show, Starring Jimmy Fallon, for a searing performance that hinted new album Jubilee will be another landmark moment in her career.
Perhaps the best moment of the appearance, however, wasn’t the performance of her new song ‘Be Sweet,’ although it did still give us butterflies, but her old song from the Soft Sounds From Another Planet LP, ‘Jimmy Fallon Big,’ which she performed with glee.
The latter performance may have arrived as a web exclusive, but it still feels like a poignant moment of kismet—a time when Japanese Breakfast can finally add a little closure to the track. “I wrote this song about the bass player of Little Big League,” recalled Zauner of the song when speaking to NPR.
“He’d been offered a better touring gig and so he sat me down at my kitchen table and told me he had to quit the band because this other band were going to be ‘Jimmy Fallon big.’ At the time it felt like losing a brother, and there was this shame, feeling like I was never going to get there myself. Funny enough, he now plays bass in Japanese Breakfast! Now we just need to play Jimmy Fallon and the cycle will be complete!”
Now we can all rest assured that the cycle is complete. Jubilee, the new album from Japanese Breakfast, will arrive on June 4th via Dead Oceans. For now, sit back and catch Zauner performing the new song ‘Be Sweet’ and her full-circle moment, ‘Jimmy Fallon Big’.
