Japanese Breakfast covers 'California Dreamin'

‘California Dreamin” is one of those tracks synonymous with bearded men who smell like pot and desperately want to play you a song, any song, on their acoustic guitar. But Japanese Breakfast’s Michelle Zauner has given it a brand new coat with her cover of The Mamas & The Papas’ classic.

When dropping in to the Sirius FM studios, Zauner went about giving the 60’s folk stalwart a fresh new makeover. Long gone is the jangly guitar riffs and sunshining folk-pop purities, and that massive chorus. Now it’s a sultry 80’s retro beauty.

Replacing the noodling and canoodling guitar lines with an more atmospheric synth sound completely re-frames the dynamic of the track and leaves us feeling far from sun-kissed, and closer to the darkness.
