Jane’s Addiction release statement following onstage fight

On Friday, September 13th, Jane’s Addiction show in Boston was cut short following an onstage confrontation between frontman Perry Farrell and guitarist Dave Navarro. After a period of silence, the band have since addressed the issue.

“We want to extend a heartfelt apology for the events that unfolded last night,” the band wrote on their Instagram story. “As a result we will be cancelling tomorrow night’s show in Bridgeport.” The band offered no further comment and it remains unclear whether they will fulfil the remainder of their tour dates beyond Bridgeport.

There had been rumblings of discontent in the camp prior to the concert. During an outdoor gig in New York on Tuesday, Farrell told the audience: “Ladies and gentlemen, I have to be honest with you. Something’s wrong with my voice. I just can’t get the notes out all of a sudden.”

Bassist Eric Avery brought further attention to the fact that the band weren’t functioning at the height of their capacity when he wrote: “Looking forward to getting another crack at this spectacular rooftop venue tonight. I’m optimistic we will be better.”

However, nothing had quite suggested that a fight would imminently break out in the manner it did in Boston on Friday 13th. Now, there is little to indicate without a solution has been reached within the band or whether this will lead to another breakup of the alternative band.

However, Farrell’s wife of over two decades, Etty Lau Farrell, did shed some light on the situation with a statement of her own. “Rather than speculating, I thought to post a first person account of what happened on stage,” the post began. Etty went on to detail the tension and frustrations that had been building within the band long before the Boston show.

“Clearly there had been a lot of tension and animosity between the members,” she commented, “the magic that made the band so dynamic. Well, the dynamite was lit. Perry got up in Dave’s face and body checked him.”

“While Dave was keeping Perry at arm’s length to de-escalate the situation. Dan rushed over to de-escalate as well by holding Perry back,” Etty explained, “Dave walked away to take his guitar off. Eric walked up to Perry, upstage, in the dark, behind Dan, put Perry in a headlock and punched him in the stomach three times.”

This is a developing story and the band are expected to make further comments on their future in the coming days.
