Jane’s Addiction classic line-up share first new track in 34 years

Jane’s Addiction have shared the new single, ‘Imminent Redemption’, marking their first release since bassist Eric Avery rejoined the band in 2022.

The heavy rock group have now been reunited for 15 years but although Avery was part of the initial reunion in 2008, he left two years later. Therefore, the bassist didn’t contribute to their most recent album, The Great Escape Artist, and the new track is his first time laying down bass for Jane’s Addiction since 1990’s Ritual de lo Habitual.

Avery played no part in Jane’s Addiction’s first reunion, which commenced in 2001 and lasted until 2004, which saw them release Strays in 2003. Although they’ve shared material in his absence, Avery is the final piece of the Jane’s Addiction puzzle, as he shows on ‘Imminent Redemption’, which is built on the strength of his muscular bassline.

With this being Avery and Jane’s Addiction, there’s no guarantee that he’ll remain a member forever. Therefore, fans should enjoy every second of his current tenure.

In a statement to coincide with the release of the single, the band celebrated Avery’s return, proudly saying, “It is different this time. To have everyone back together, releasing new music. It’s time. Welcome to the next chapter of Jane’s Addiction. ‘Imminent Redemption’ is only the beginning.”

New music from Jane’s Addiction has been hinted by the group for two years, but it remained to be seen for some time whether anything would materialise. Avery’s return to the fold was unofficially announced when he shared an image of him with singer Perry Farrell at the studio, which was later revealed to be for Jane’s Addiction material.

Furthermore, last year, Farrell provided an update on the development of new songs while in conversation with the Brazilian radio station 89 A Rádio Rock, claiming, “I feel that this new bunch of songs… We don’t know how many we’re gonna put out. But I can tell you one thing: it’s been one of the most exciting times of my life, because these songs are that good”.

Farrell also said that he “can’t wait for people to hear” the material they’ve been working on since reuniting with Avery. Drummer Stephen Perkins matched this excitement, describing it as a “great experience” and promising the band would “go for it as hard as we can.”

At this stage, it remains uncertain whether Jane’s Addiction will release their long-awaited fifth album, and the first with Avery since 1990, or if they’ll continue to share one-off singles. However, most importantly, the original line-up is back and firing on all cylinders.
