Jane Fonda slams Donald Trump: “Enough is enough”
Jane Fonda has had enough. The two-time Oscar winner has used her appearance on Stephen Colbert’s late-night talk show to hit out against Donald Trump and his “authoritarian” administration.
On January 21st, the actor discussed the importance of communal resistance to the Trump administration, in a t-shirt that read simply, “Resist.”
Fonda also referenced the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE agent in Minneapolis that shocked the nation earlier this month: “They are shooting people,” She declared, horrified.
Fonda continued, “All kinds of really, really bad things are happening, and it’s not a question of Right or Left. I don’t care what party you belong to. It’s a question of right or wrong.”
Turning her attention towards Trump’s administration, Fonda added, “Authoritarianism has made its way into every single nook and cranny of our government.”
She went on, “I think lines are being crossed, and it’s enough. We’ve had enough. We are the Land of the Brave. Our loved ones fought and many died for these freedoms. We can’t allow them to be taken away from us because, if we let them go, they won’t be there later when we need them back.”
It is really that simple for Fonda, who also added, “We pay their salaries. We should be in charge. This is what we have to do. We have to not be alone. We have to work with other people in solidarity. We have to build community.”
Fonda has often used her platform for political good; last October, she launched the Committee for the First Amendment, which was created in the 1940s by a group of Hollywood stars during the McCarthy era, when many in the entertainment industry were accused of being Communists.
Speaking about the endeavour with Colbert, she explained, “Any government is held up by pillars of support. The government or the regime is only as strong as the pillars of support. We want to remove the entertainment committee as a pillar of support.”
She finished with a plea for help: ” Whatever groups that you are part of, help them get organised. Help them learn in advance what to do when they come for you — and they will, believe me. Unless we stop this. Enough is enough. We have to get organised.”
