Jane Fonda believes she should have given Oscars tribute to Robert Redford instead of Barbra Streisand: “I have more to say”

Jane Fonda has said that she should have delivered the tribute to Robert Redford at the Oscars instead of Barbra Streisand.

During the ‘In Memoriam’ segment of the ceremony, which took place on March 15th, Streisand delivered a heartfelt tribute to her late friend and co-star in The Way We Were.

Redford sadly passed away last September, aged 89. The ‘In Memoriam’ segment also saw Rachel McAdams honour the late Diane Keaton, and Billy Crystal pay homage to Rob Reiner, who was killed, along with his wife Michelle Singer, last December.

However, Fonda, who worked with Redford on four films, believes it should have been her instead of Streisand on-stage at the Oscars.

While speaking to Entertainment Tonight at the red carpet, Fonda said of the segment with Streisand during the show, “I wanna know how come Streisand was up there doing that for Redford?”

Fonda then explained why she believes that she would have been a more appropriate fit for the ceremony, adding, “She only made one movie with him, I made four. I have more to say.”

She also said of her late friend, “I was always in love with him. The most gorgeous human being and such great values and he did a lot for movies. He really changed movies, lifted up independent movies.”

Following news of Redford’s death last year, Fonda led the tributes to the Hollywood icon, sharing, “It hit me hard this morning when I read that Bob was gone. I can’t stop crying.”

Her mournful statement continued: “He meant a lot to me and was a beautiful person in every way. He stood for an America we have to keep fighting for.”

Fonda and Redford first worked together in 1966, when they starred alongside Marlon Brando in Arthur Penn’s The Chase. Their final project saw them star opposite one another in the Netflix film Our Souls At Night, which was released in 2017.

Redford once said working with Fonda was “easy” and said of his friend, “We’ve done many films over the years so it just worked out that way, that there was not a lot of discussion, we didn’t have to talk about a lot. Things just kind of fell into place between us, and there wasn’t much more to think about.”
