Jamie xx announces long-awaited second album

After nearly a decade since his debut full-length studio project, Jamie xx has announced his return with the release of his upcoming album, In Waves.

The forthcoming LP marks the first album by the famed electronic producer since 2015’s In Colour, which boasted songs such as ‘Gosh’ and ‘Loud Places’. In Waves is set to feature the collaboration between him and Honey Dijon, ‘Baddy on the Floor’, which first premiered in April. The announcement also comes with the first taste of a new song entitled ‘Treat Each Other Right’.

When discussing the new album, Jamie xx recalled how the record dealt with his growth as an artist over the past few years, stating, “It’s been a while… and a lot has happened in that time. Ups and downs, growing up, figuring stuff out and then forgetting it all many times over.”

Going into this latest project, the producer sought to create something with an introspective edge, noting, “I wanted to make something fun, joyful, and introspective all at once. The best moments on a dance floor are usually that for me.”

Of course, the producer hasn’t been dormant during the last decade, either. He had been known for composing the score for the ballet Tree of Codes and has recently come off a ten-show residency at London nightclub MOT. Furthermore, he’s also relentlessly toured the world, made an album with The xx, who are also in the process of making another LP.

After starting the initial sessions in 2020, Jamie has also been known for helping flesh out arrangements for other artists. Despite releasing occasional one-off singles like ‘Idontknow’ in 2020 and ‘It’s So Good‘ in 2024, he is also credited as one of the producers on the song ‘RISE!’ from Tyler The Creator’s last album Call Me If You Get Lost.

Jamie xx is also not alone on this latest project. His bandmates in The xx, Romy and Oliver Sim, return to feature on the new album. Additionally, there are set to be appearances by electronic group The Avalanches as well as dance-pop icon Robyn.

In Waves will be released on September 20th.
