Whodunit: Jamie Lee Curtis to head up ‘Murder, She Wrote’ reboot movie

Jamie Lee Curtis has landed her next big role; she will star as Jessica Fletcher in the big-screen reboot of Murder, She Wrote.

The 67-year-old star will bring a new life to the long-running television series as she takes on the mystery author and amateur detective played originally by Angela Lansbury.

Universal has confirmed that the film is underway and has a projected release date of December 22nd, 2027.

The original beloved series ran for a total of 12 seasons between 1984 and 1996 and pulled in millions of viewers a week.

The big-screen re-imagining will be directed by Jason Moore, the mind behind comedies Pitch Perfect and Sisters.

Lauren Schuker Blum and Rebecca Angelo, who wrote the script for the GameStop stock movie Dumb Money, will take on script-writing duties.

Curtis had been linked to the role since 2025. While on press for her latest comedy, Freakier Friday, the actor confirmed that the film would be happening.

At the time, she shared, “We’re a minute away. But very excited. Very excited. But I’m tamping down my enthusiasm until we start shooting. I have a couple other things to hustle, and then I’ll get to enjoy that work.”

Lansbury, who passed away in 2022, was initially upset with the idea of a small-screen reboot that centred around Oscar-winning actor Octavia Spencer.

While Lansbury deemed Spencer a “lovely actress”, she thought it was a “mistake” to reboot the idea: “I think it’s a mistake to call it Murder, She Wrote because Murder, She Wrote will always be about Cabot Cove and this wonderful little group of people who told those lovely stories and enjoyed a piece of that place, and also enjoyed Jessica Fletcher, who is a rare and very individual kind of person,” she said in 2013.

The idea was put to bed; Lansbury said she was “terribly pleased and relieved” as it was a “terrible mistake”. One might hope she would have greater confidence in the Universal reboot should she be around to see it.
