James Gunn shares first trailer for new ‘Superman’ movie
James Gunn has unveiled the first trailer for his new Superman movie, which will be released on July 11th, 2025.
The upcoming film, set to start a new era for the DC Comics Universe following Gunn’s appointment as CEO in 2022, stars David Corenswet as Superman and Clark Kent. He appears alongside Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane. The supporting cast also includes Nicholas Hoult, Edi Gathegi, Anthony Carrigan, Nathan Fillion, and Isabela Merced.
The new chapter of the DC Comics Universe under Gunn’s stewardship has been titled Chapter One: Gods and Universe. More films are set to be announced within this world in due course following the release of Superman, which promises set the scene for Gunn’s vision for DC.
After the release of the trailer on December 19th, Gunn participated in a Q&A session at Warner Bros Studios in Los Angeles, where he explained that the first teaser is supposed to show how Kent/Superman “lives in a world with superheroes.”
The director and writer elaborated (per Variety): “Superhero movies have taken these characters and said, ‘Okay, it’s Batman [or] it’s Superman, but it’s not any of the other stuff’. We’re embracing all of the Superman mythology. He has friends who are other superheroes.”
Gunn continued: “He has people he doesn’t get along as well with who are other superheroes. He has a lot of the things that we love from the Superman comics that we haven’t been able to see as much of in filmed media, and definitely haven’t been able to see in a grounded way, which is what I hope we’ve created.”
Additionally, Hoult said of his take on Lex Luthor in Superman: “Obviously, he’s smart and ruthless, and he has to outmaneuver Superman on certain levels, because he can’t match him in others. But there’s also something about this character, hopefully, from my standpoint, where even though you perhaps don’t agree with his process, you can understand where he’s coming from and why what he’s pushing as his ideology is perhaps better for humanity.”
