James Cameron reveals new details about ‘Avatar 3’ and ‘Avatar 4’

James Cameron has recently revealed new details about Avatar 3 and Avatar 4, stating that the former is “right on track” for its December 2025 release date.

Work on the movie began before the release of the second Avatar film, Avatar: The Way of Water, which hit theatres in December 2022, amassing $2.3 billion worldwide and claiming the third-highest-grossing film spot.

To maintain character age consistency, Cameron filmed Avatar 3 and significant parts of Avatar 4 simultaneously with The Way of Water.

“We did the [motion] capture on three and the live-action photography on three as an intermingled production with [Avatar: The Way of Water], and we even did part of movie four because our young characters are all going to have a big time jump in movie four,” Cameron told People.

He also mentioned the time jump that will feature in Avatar 4, explaining: “We see them and then we go away for six years and we come back. And so the part where we come back is the part we haven’t shot yet. So we’ll start on that after three is released.”

“Three is actually much more straightforward than two,” he added, discussing the post-production process. “Two, we got hit with the pandemic in the middle of it and we were interrupted, and then we had to reboot and reboot the production and all that sort of thing. And it was a scramble to get it done.”

Cameron has yet to shoot Avatar 5. The release of Avatar 3 was pushed back after Disney had a major reshuffle of its release calendar, causing Avatar 5 to be delayed to December 2031. This will mean that Avatar 5 will come out 22 years after the original film’s release.

The first two Avatar movies are currently available to stream on Disney Plus.
