James Cameron has “ideas” for ‘Avatar 6’ and ‘Avatar 7’

After a 13-year gap between the first and second instalments, the third release in the Avatar franchise in James Cameron’s sci-fi saga is now set for release in December 2025, and the director has no plans to slow down.

Furthermore, the fifth and sixth entries are tentatively eying 2029 and 2031 releases, respectively. However, this could all be subject to change given the number of release date shuffles that The Way of Water endured during its production process.

When Avatar 5 arrives in cinemas, the Terminator and Titanic director will have spent more than 20 years of his cinema career in Pandora, yet Cameron wants to keep the Avatar story going beyond the fifth film. However, despite his plans to keep the franchise alive, Cameron may move away from the director’s chair.

“We’re fully written through movie five, and I’ve got ideas for six and seven, although I’ll probably be handing the baton on at that point,” Cameron said in a new interview with People. “Mortality catches up. But I mean, we’re enjoying what we’re doing. We’re loving it. We get to work with great people.”

Additionally, Cameron defended his decision to dedicate this stage in his career to Avatar, stating: “People are always asking us, ‘So why did you just keep working in the same…’ Why did [George] Lucas keep working in the same thing? Why did [Gene] Roddenberry keep working in the same thing?,” he questioned.

He added: “Because when you connect with people, why would you squander that? Why would you start over with something else that might not connect?”

Avatar will remain Cameron’s sole focus for the foreseeable future, and he’s likely to remain on board in a creative capacity even if another filmmaker takes the reigns of directing.
