British electronic wizard James Blake has announced details for his upcoming fifth studio album, Friends That Break Your Heart.
As is always the case with a Blake release, Friends That Break Your Heart is set to feature some killer collaborators, including SZA, JID, SwaVay, and Monica Martin. Even Blake’s partner, actress Jameela Jamil, is part of the proceedings, as she receives an additional producer credit on the album’s first single, ‘Say What You Will’.
Blake dropped ‘Say What You Will’ today along with the album’s announcement. If you were potentially worried that Blake would be experimental or change his style at all, fear not. ‘Say What You Will’ sounds exactly like every other James Blake song, save perhaps for his low rumbling vocal performance that sounds like Bon Iver singing through an octave pedal.
“The song is about finding peace with who you are and where you’re at regardless of how well other people seem to be doing. Comparison really is the thief of joy,” Blake explains in a press release.
The song also comes with a new video starring American producer and Billie Eilish collaborator/sibling Finneas, of all people. Blake has ascended to the point of music stardom that he’s basically just hanging out with friends and including them in his work. “Hey Finneas, I’m in town shooting a video, do you wanna be in it?” – that’s how I imagine it went in my head.
The video itself is actually quite funny: Blake clutching his lone Grammy as Finneas walks by with an armful of them. Fans wanting Blake to take pictures of them with Finneas instead of with him. Finneas getting premiere treatment at the airport while Blake gets cavity searched. It’s all very amusing, and mostly distracts from the deadpan moan of the song it’s accompanying.
