James Blake has been a beacon of light during the lockdown, keeping himself busy with plentiful live streams filled with gorgeous covers. Now, with his latest effort, Blake has taken on Nirvana’s ‘Come As You Are’.
The musician has already covered the likes of Joy Divison’s ‘Atmosphere’, Billie Eilish’s ‘When The Party’s Over’, Radiohead’s ‘No Surprises’ and ‘A Case Of You’ by Joni Mitchell but his propensity to transform Nirvana’s ‘Come As You Are’ into a piano ballad might just be his best yet.
On Saturday evening, the English singer-songwriter hosted an improvised piano concert on his Instagram page, a place in which he encouraged fans who had tuned in to donate to Rachel Cargle’s Loveland Foundation “who provide opportunity, access, and therapy for Black women and girls.”
During the set, Blake transformed Nirvana’s ‘Come As You Are’ into a piano ballad and it is truly incredible just how much it works.
In April, Blake released ‘You’re Too Precious’ which is a track that the 31-year-old crooner has been teasing for some time, with him first mentioning the song in a chat with Billboard all the way back in October: “I am about to drop something, a song that I am really excited about,” he said. “The title is ‘You’re Too Precious.’”
Unfortunately, this track does seem to be a standalone release and fans shouldn’t be expecting another full release effort from the Englishman anytime soon as he told Beats 1’s Zane Lowe: “It is a strange time to release music in terms of a record… I think, just industry-wise, it’s just a strange time. I don’t really know what is up or down.”
