Jack Black names the best actor he’s ever worked with: “My favourite co-star I’ve ever had”
Jack Black is one of those rare performers who seems entirely unaware that he is being perceived at any given moment, with a natural aptitude for stealing the limelight seemingly without trying. He oozes effortless charisma and is always an entertainer, no matter what he is doing. Whether it be his laid-back persona on talk shows, his infectious humour in School of Rock or starry-eyed romanticism in The Holiday, Black can always find a way to make people laugh and capture the hearts of global audiences. However, in all his years of entertainment, the actor has named the one co-star that he most loved working with.
The Holiday has become a yearly ritual for many people around the festive season, with viewers returning to the dazzling smile of Jude Law and the property porn that is always present in the world of Nancy Meyers. With a simplistic yet complicated cross-continental storyline and electric chemistry between the leads, it is revered as one of the most heart-warming Christmas films of all time for a good reason.
However, while Black is also very fond of the film, he also holds it close to his heart purely because of his admiration for Kate Winslet, describing her as the best actor he’s ever worked with. Winslet rose to fame after her work in the period film Sense and Sensibility, leading to global stardom after her heart-wrenching performance in Titanic, which is one of the most commercially successful films of all time.
The actor then returned to her independent roots on projects such as Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind before reuniting with James Cameron in 2022 for Avatar: The Way of Water. Winslet has always been an advocate for women in the industry, speaking up about the harassment and abuse she suffered as a young actor and working to empower women in the arts.
As well as this, Winslet is adored for her relatable and endearing performance in The Holiday, playing a victim of unrequited love who runs away to Los Angeles for a holiday after discovering that the man she loves is getting married. Her character is then swept up in a friendship with an elderly gentleman and a local film composer, played by Jack Black.
When describing his favourite actor to work with, Black immediately sang the praises of Winslet, saying, “Kate Winslet and I’ll tell you why. She was my favourite co-star I’ve ever had because when you look in her eyes, she was like really present,” Black recalled. “I feel like if you look into my eyes, you just see a shadow of a robot.”
While it is hard to imagine that such an expressive performer would have robot eyes, it is easy to believe that Winslet would be held in such high regard. Many of her co-stars have highlighted her warmth and dedication to her craft, with her former co-star Leonardo DiCaprio always piping up to share his love for her. Many fans would surely love for the pair to be reunited on screen, and given how strong their chemistry was, perhaps this isn’t too far-fetched an idea.
