Jack Black makes Billboard Hot 100 history with ‘A Minecraft Movie’ hit
Jack Black has made history again with his global smash hit film A Minecraft Movie, becoming the custodian of having the shortest ever song to become a Billboard Hot 100 hit.
A song that Black’s character Steve sings in the film, ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’, lasts just 34 seconds in length but has made history as the shortest ever tune to chart in the Billboard Hot 100, making its first appearance this week at number 77.
The short song, in which Steve teaches his fellow travellers about how to cook a chicken using molten lava, beats out the previous record in the chart set in 2020 by King Cudi, with his 37-second instrumental tune ‘Beautiful Trip’.
It comes as A Minecraft Movie has rocketed to be one of the most successful and highest-grossing films of recent years, raking in a whopping $157 million domestically in the United States.
For the part of ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’, this is also not the only instance of the tune making headway in the charts, as it previously also set the record for the shortest song to enter the UK Top 40, hitting the number 21 spot in the first week before climbing up to 11.
When news of this first achievement was announced on April 18th, Black took to Instagram to thank fans by saying: “OK, I just heard that ‘Steve’s Lava Chicken’ has cracked the UK Top 40. I want to send big love to all the Minecraft fans for getting us up there – it’s insane! Love you!”
This is not the first time one of Black’s comedy songs has hit the charts, as he previously reached number 27 in the UK with ‘Peaches’ from The Super Mario Bros Movie upon its release in 2023.
