Jack Antonoff blasts musicians embracing AI as “godless whores”

Bleachers frontman Jack Antonoff has condemned artists using AI to make music, labelling them as “godless whores”.

As Bleachers prepare to release their new album, Everyone for Ten Minutes, on May 22nd, Antonoff shared a love letter to the creative process and hit out at those who are using AI as a shortcut.

Addressing fans on social media, Antonoff said from the heart, “What we do has become an ancient ritual. You don’t have to write music anymore, you don’t have to record it and you don’t have to bring out the band and play it. And yet for us, the idea of optimizing what we do is a complete miss of the entire point of what compels us in the first place.”

Antonoff continued from the heart, “We (myself, the band and everyone I know, frankly) have never been looking for this work to become quicker or easier. We were never frustrated by the randomness and magic it takes. We do it for that exact reason – and without the process itself ::: nothingness.”

The Grammy-winning producer then turned his attention to “everyone who is gassed up about the new ways you can fake making art, by all means drive right off that cliff”, before adding, “We’re genuinely happy to see you go.”

Despite the rise in the use of AI, Antonoff is confident that music creation will continue in its purest form, sharing, “Generations coming will be engaging in the ancient ritual of writing, recording and performing as it comes to us from God.”

He then described those using AI to assist them as “bad actors” who are going to “willingly reveal themselves through slop”.

Antonoff added of his stance, “We (myself, the band and frankly everyone I know) remain more dedicated than ever to reveal what comes from within. Writing music, recording and performing it — that’s it. Nothing more embarrassing than considering there is a way to optimize that holy process,” before saying, “Godless whores”.

On the other hand, Diplo recently warned his fellow musicians, like Antonoff, who are anti-AI, “You’re not going to win. Like there’s no there’s no like fighting AI. You have to just work your best to be the best at it right now. You’re wasting your time. You’re just wasting a year being like ‘ah,’ because everybody else is going to just use it, not give a fuck what you think.”

Additionally, José González confirmed to Far Out in April that he wrote a song on his latest album, Against the Dying of the Light, with the help of ChatGPT, and admitted that he was “curious about this new technology”.
