Iconic actor Donald Sutherland dies at 88

Canadian actor Donald Sutherland has passed away at the age of 88. He brought iconic roles to the big screen for decades, starring in The Hunger Games, Pride & Prejudice and Klute. His agent confirmed that the late actor passed away after a long battle with illness.

Penning a eulogy to his father in a written statement, Sutherland’s son Kiefer stated, “With a heavy heart, I tell you that my father, Donald Sutherland, has passed away. I personally think one of the most important actors in the history of film.”

In addition to his celebrated roles throughout the years, Kiefer also praised his father’s inherent love for film, saying, “Never daunted by a role, good, bad or ugly. He loved what he did and did what he loved, and one can never ask for more than that. A life well lived.”

Sutherland had begun his career working in television. After graduating from the London Academy of Music and Dramatic Art, he was first known for taking on various roles on the small screen, starting with a bit role in the 1960s drama Studio 4 to television films such as The Sunshine Patriot.

From there, Sutherland began his career in films such as The Dirty Dozen, starring as Pvt. Vernon Pinkley, as well as the film M*A*S*H as ‘Hawkeye’ Pierce. The latter of which would later be turned into the celebrated television series of the same name, with actor Alan Alda portraying Sutherland’s role.

Although such beloved roles were his mainstay, Sutherland’s filmography wasn’t strictly tied to one genre. Outside of starring in iconic comedies like Animal House, the actor was known best for his dramatic roles, including Ordinary People, as well as acclaimed films going into the 1990s, such as the political film JFK and the intense race drama A Time to Kill starring Matthew McConaughey.

In the past decade, Sutherland had also become known by an entirely new generation as the villainous President Snow in the Hunger Games franchise. While the latest reimaginings of the dystopian fiction series have been prequels surrounding his character, there had been no word about whether the actor was set to reprise his role in future instalments.

Sutherland hadn’t stopped working on films in the years since, either, having turned in time working on projects like 2023’s Miranda’s Victim and was involved in the film Heart Land, which is still unreleased at this time. As of yet, there has been no word of any posthumous performances.

This is a developing story.
